Soft Space

A subtitler who stopped speaking after her brother's death is hired to translate a film in which he appears, uncredited, in the background of every scene.

We read hundreds of scripts a year, and very few begin with a question as simple and as strange as this one: what do you write under someone who says nothing at all? Lena Müller has worked as a subtitler herself, and it shows in every scene. She knows that a subtitle has two lines and a few seconds, and that grief does not fit.

False Starts is a quiet drama about translation and about the words that arrive one sentence too late. We are proud to be developing it with her.
